Dermatomyositis (DMS) is an inflammatory disease affecting skin as well as muscle and swallowing reflex in extreme cases. This is an auto-immune disease which in rare cases can be fatal. In the UK Smooth population this disease has not been reported as far as we are aware.
Whilst there is a hereditary element, the trigger seems to be an environmental challenge to the dog. Diagnosis depends on a biopsy from an active lesion so timing is everything. The DNA test developed in the United States where there is a greater problem identifies whether the dog is high, medium or low risk. Of the UK Smooths tested so far, the vast majority have tested as low risk. For more information click here.
